How to install Netmon on VMWare

Netmon is supported in virtual machine environments, however the typical performance characteristics of a VM (generally poor I/O compared to a physical machine) can severely affect Netmon's ability to effectively sniff a network segment. In scenarios where the Netmon VM is primarily to be used for testing, or for SNMP management, this may be less of a concern. Also, a Netmon VM might be appropriate in networks with relatively light traffic loads (typical network traffic less than 5 megabits per second sustained).

Netmon will likely work with any virtualization product which allows Linux guest operating systems. Only VMWare has been tested by Netmon staff.

Please ensure that the equipment you will host your VM on meets the minimum requirements for your virtualization software.

To install Netmon on a virtual machine, you need a VMWare product that allows you to create VMs. This means either VMWare Workstation or VMWare Server. VMWare Server can be downloaded free-of-charge from the VMWare corporate web site. You can download VMWare server here: http://www.vmware.com/products/server/

Online product documentation for VMWare Server (including installation instructions) can be found here: http://pubs.vmware.com/server1/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm

Please install VMWare server according to the vendor's documentation. Once this has been done and you are able to create a new VM, you can begin the process of creating a Netmon virtual machine. Create the virtual machine according to the software vendor's instructions. Keep Netmon minimum system requirements in mind, particularly storage and memory.
