How To See Who is Using the Most Bandwidth on Your Network

Note that you need to have your Netmon device sniffing traffic from your switch for this to work. Netmon needs visibility of your network traffic to complete this HOWTO. For instructions on setting up traffic sniffing, see http://wiki.netmon.ca/index.php/User_Guide:Monitoring_Network_Activity#How_Netmon_Monitors_Network_Traffic

There are 3 ways to find who is the biggest consumer of bandwidth on your network:

Top Activity Snapshot

On the Home screen, expand the Top Activity Snapshot panel. It will show you the current connections which are transferring the most data. Image:screen11.jpg

Looking at this report, it is clear that the Client – Linux machine is making most of the largest connections on your network.

Visual Network Explorer

Click the Networks icon on the Netmon toolbar to go to the Networks screen. For Conversations, select ”Top 16”. For Traffic View click “Relative”.

Again it is clear that Client – Linux is the machine making the largest connections. Double click on the icon to see details about the connections it is currently making.

Bandwidth Consumption Report

The above methods are useful for finding the current top network user. Sometimes you may want to find who was the top user in some past time period, such as the previous week or month. Use the Bandwidth Consumption Report for this purpose. Use the following settings for the report:

By running this report you will see how much traffic was sent from each computer on your network. Order the report by the 'Total' column to see which computers have the highest amount of traffic sent. The computer at the top of the list has transferred the most traffic over the time period.
